Aerobic exercise will reduce fat on the hips and buttocks. The problem is -- most fit people with an excess of fat in these areas are pear-shaped, meaning they are small on the upper part of their bodies and larger in the lower half. There is no way to spot reduce with exercise -- you will just look like a smaller pear. If you are already fit and thin on top and want to spot reduce, you should get liposuction.
Get Over the Stigma
Get over the stigma. It is not vain to want to look your best -- it is actually a sign of high self-esteem. Liposuction is a perfectly valid and safe way to lose weight. Some people are genetically predisposed to carrying more weight on their buttocks and thighs. This does not make you a bad person. You did nothing to cause this.
If you force yourself to diet to excess, you will lose weight all over and will not achieve the look that you want and could be putting your health at risk. Some people hold a distorted belief that if you work hard enough, you can achieve any fitness goal that you want. Sometimes hard work just leads to frustration and quitting. There is nothing wrong with taking the smartest, most efficient approach which may include liposuction.
Talk it Out
Talk to your friends and family. Dr. Jennifer Walden plastic surgeon, recommends talking about any embarrassment you should have about liposuction to your friends and family. She states it is likely family and friends may also have had cosmetic procedures performed or have been considering it. Liposuction is becoming more accepted in the main stream -- it has been the most popular form of plastic surgery for over 30 years. Sharing your thoughts with others will help you work through issues you may be having.
Educate Yourself
Learn the mechanics of the procedure, which generally involves either a local or intravenous anesthesia, followed by the doctor making small incisions in areas of focus. The incisions may leave a small scar, but a skilled surgeon hides these scars in discrete spots so these are unnoticeable by the casual observer.
A cannula, which looks like a small hose is inserted via these incisions and fat is sucked out of the body. Usually, recovery time is about a week, depending on the intensity of the operation and you must wear a shaping girdle during recovery. As with all surgical procedures, there are risks, although serious complications are relatively rare. These can include: infection: blood clots friction burns and bruising from the cannula.
Get a Consultation
Consult with a plastic surgeon. Schedule an appointment with a plastic surgeon to go over options. Select an aesthetic physician; look for a board-certificatied dermatologist or plastic surgeon. Verify that the initial consultation is free and ask the the doctor to explain the risks and costs of the procedure, what the operation will entail, and what you can expect. It is permissible to obtain several consultations and go with the doctor you like the best, who charges the most reasonable rate.
